Notes from the Artist: ‘In this portrait, I wanted to show Sarah’s lighter, more humorous and less melancholic side. I was particularly pleased with the slight smirk on Sarah’s face coupled with with the surprised and amused expression on Lilly Langtry’s. The reason for Lilly’s response is that the mischievous Sarah is pinching Lilly on the bottom as the original photograph was taken.
